Vestfold Hills penguin colonies digitised from Linhof aerial photography flown 24 November 1993
Aerial photography (Linhof) of penguin colonies was acquired over the Vestfold Hills (Eric Woehler).
The penguin colonies were traced, then digitised (John Cox), and saved as DXF-files.
Using the ArcView extension 'Register and Transform' (Tom Velthuis), The DXF-files were brought into a GIS and transformed to the appropriate islands.

- Statement
- TOPIC: Planimetric accuracy of penguin colony transformations. NOTE: The planimetric accuracy stated herein is relative to the existing GIS, coastline and penguin colony data - not 'absolute planimetric accuracy'. That is, it was assumed that the coastline and penguin colony data existing in the GIS is without error. Also, errors accumulated in the creation of the digitised penguin colonies (.DXF files) have not been considered here. The stated accuracy is an estimate - was not derived by statistical means. The penguin colonies are generally accurate to (+/-20m). Exceptions include: -'Island southwest of Mule Island' (+/-30m); -'Lugg Island' - Whilst the coastline matches very well, the colonies do not overlay. However, the colonies are quite similar but are displaced by up to (+/-80m); -'South Tryne Island b' could be up to (+/-60m); -'Murphy' and 'McCallie Rocks' have not been transformed because the GIS is not ready for this. ie. The map-tile does not extend this far.
