Antarctic CRC and Australian Antarctic Division Climate Data Set - Australian iceberg observations
This dataset contains iceberg observations collected routinely on Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) by Antarctic expeditioners on a volunteer basis. The observations were made each austral summer from the 1978/1979 season until the 2000/2001 season. Data included voyage number, date, time, latitude, longitude, sea ice concentration, water temperature, total icebergs, number of icebergs in each width category, the width to height ratio of selected larger tabular icebergs. It was been compiled and presented on the web by the Glaciology program of the Antarctic CRC (now ACE CRC).

- Statement
- Observations were made each season, since the 1978/1979 austral summer season, using volunteers on ANARE expeditions, until the 2000/2001 season. The data were routinely collected by volunteer expeditioners on ANARE expeditions, and had been collated by the Antarctic CRC (Now ACE CRC) and Australian Antarctic Division. Observations were made at 3 hourly intervals depending on the ship speed. After the first iceberg sighting, observations with no icebergs within the 6nm range, were recorded as 'no iceberg sightings', to distinguish between cases where there were no icebergs and where there were no observation made. At night or in poor visibility, observations were made by recording only the total number of icebergs as shown by radar observation for the 6 nm range. Location was recorded in degrees and minutes using the ships's position, along with the date and local time of the observation. Observations were made by counting the number of icebergs within a 6nm range. This 6nm range was determined by using the ship's radar or by counting all icebergs which were completely above the horizon.
