Statement
Southern Ocean species are considered in detail, with adjacent water species included in the keys. All known Southern Ocean species are included. The synonym, diagnostic characters, geographical and bathymetric distribution of each species is given, together with an illustration and distribution map. The species found in the Southern Ocean include: 5 species of salps (Order Desomyaria), 1 species of doliolid (Order Cyclomyaria) and 27 species, forms and types of larvaceans (Order Appendicularia). The species found in the Southern Ocean (water between the Antarctic continent and the Subtropical Convergence) are described in detail, while those found in the adjacent waters (between 30 degrees south and the Subtropical Convergence) are included in the keys. The class, order, family, genus and species descriptions used in this dataset are from Thompson, H. (1948) Pelagic Tunicates of Australia. Handbook, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (Australia). pp 196, 75 pls, unless otherwise stated. The information presented in temporal and spatial coverage is approximate only.
