Phenotypic plasticity in habitat-forming seaweeds subject to latitudinal transplant
The phenotypic plasticity of habitat-forming seaweeds was investigated with a transplant experiment in which juvenile Ecklonia radiata and Phyllospora comosa were transplanted from NSW (warm conditions) to Tasmania (cool conditions) and monitored for four months. We used multiple performance indicators (growth, photosynthetic characteristics, pigment content, chemical composition, stable isotopes, nucleic acids) to assess the ecophysiology of seaweeds before and following transplantation between February 2012 and June 2012.

- Statement
- Juvenile Ecklonia radiata and Phyllospora comosa were transplanted from NSW-Tas and Tas-Tas. Seaweeds were first collected and kept overnight in the laboratory where they were attached to lengths of 6 mm diameter polypropylene rope by inserting holdfasts into the weave of the rope. Phyllospora were outplanted at a depth of ~5m and Ecklonia at ~10m in Fortescue Bay, Tasmania on 28th/29th February 2012. Measurements of growth and PAM fluorometry were made monthly, while other destructive ecophysiological measurements were made in situ at the time of collection, and 123 days following transplantation. The following parameters were measured: growth, PAM fluorometry photosynthetic characteristics, pigment content (chlorophyll a, c, fucoxanthin), tissue chemistry (δ13C, δ15N, % C, % N, C:N ratios), and nucleic acid characteristics (absolute RNA and DNA, RNA:DNA ratios). Terminal measurements were made on 30th June 2012. Pigments were measured using spectrophotometry and HPLC. Tissue chemistry was measured using mass spectrometry. Nucleic acids were measured using a novel technique described in Flukes et al. 2016. See Flukes et al. 2016 for a full description of all methodologies. NOTE: in data file "otherparamdata.csv", "start" sampling refers to in situ samples, "end" sampling refers to terminal measurements at t = 123 days. In data files "growthdata.csv" and contents of "raw_PAM_RLC_output", sample times refer to time since transplantation (days).
