Zooplanktonic communities of south east Tasmania 2000-2001

Zooplankton samples were collected at two sites in south eastern Tasmania, between the years 2000 and 2001 using two types of plankton net. Samples were collected using horizontal hauls during the daytime only. All copepods, salps and chaetognaths were identified and enumerated.

Purpose
The data were collected and processed using similar techniques to those of a study conducted 30 years previously at nearby sites (see Nyan Taw records). Changes in the species composition of the different samples may imply temporal changes in the sea water along the east coast of Tasmania

Resource lineage

Statement
For the first two months of the experiment a WP2 net (Unesco, 1968) with 250 micron mesh and 50cm diameter was used. After this a surface double net was designed so that the neustonic community of the area could be separated from the rest of the plankton community. The aperture of this new net was 100cm wide by 10cm high for the top net, and 100cm wide by 20cm high for the bottom one. The length of both nets was 150cm and the mesh was 300 microns. A calibrated flowmeter (General Oceanics) was used to estimate volume of water filtered.

Resource lineage

Statement
Zooplankton samples were collected at two sites: the Mercury Channel and Okehampton Bay approximately bi-monthly from March 2000 until June 2001. Nets were floated at the surface on a 15m cable and towed at 1m/s. Samples were usually taken during calm sea conditions. The samples were preserved as soon as possible in 5% formalin. They were later transferred to 70% alcohol for sorting.
